Day 3 - Rafting the Pacuare River

Today we woke up early and hit the road for a very windy and long drive to Turrialba to start our rafting adventure. We drove through the mountains and near a lot of the coffee and cocoa plantations and got to see some of the beautiful countryside of Costa Rica! When we got to the river we split into five boats for our five hour trip down the river! Halfway through the adventure we stopped for a freshly prepared meal of Iguana Tail burritos (truly just chicken burritos) with fresh guacamole and fruit! When we ended our trip we were about 45 minutes from the Caribbean side of the country.

Boat 1: Macy, Kirsten, Tanner, Shane, Bryan T

“It was so much fun!!! We went backwards and did circles on the rapids. And our raft was the best, we were killing it!!!! And thank goodness for Bryan and Shane who pulled me back in the raft when I fell out.” - Macy 

“ It was so exciting and fun!! Going down the rapids was so much fun, especially when we went backwards and in circles down the rapids! Our group was so much fun and we did so good!!” - Kirsten

Boat 2: Jacee, Zach, Rebecca, Kyle R, Miss Clausen

“Our boat was a party! We were super timid at first but our guide Alex pushed us hard and then the second half was light work. We were thriving because we caught two fish and made sure to sing songs throughout the river.” Jacee

“Rafting was so much fun and so thrilling! Zach and Miss Clausen saved each other from falling out, we jammed out to Justin Bieber and some classics, and even caught some fish! Couldn’t have asked for a better boat!! - Rebecca

Boat 3: Abby, Diana, Delany, Ben, Ronald

“It was so much fun and we  spun around a went backwards down the rapids a lot which was kinda scary at times! I almost fell in a couple of time but luckily Ronald pulled me back in! One time we got stuck on a really big rock in the middle of the rapids and all had to climb to the front of the raft which was super funny.” -Abby

“Rafting was an awesome experience viewing God’s creation somewhere I have never been before! It was super crazy going down fast rapids and hitting rocks and having to work together as a team to get  out without anyone falling out!! Super grateful for the experience!” - Diana 

“Rafting was so amazing! It was so eye opening to see the nature and wildlife of Costa Rica! We all had so much fun and our guide was awesome!! Even though I almost fell out a couple times, going down the rapids was so much fun! I am so grateful that I got the chance to experience this with my friends!!” - Delany

Boat 4: Savannah, Ally, Justin, Gage

“We had so much fun rafting! Our guide was really nice and very engaging! Thankfully nobody fell out, but I was very close a couple times. The scenery was so amazing, it was incredible to see God’s creation! I am so grateful for this amazing experience with some of my best friends!” - Savannah

“Our guide was not super pleased with us because none of us had been rafting before, and we may zhave gotten stuck on some rocks, but we made it through and learned to work together as a team! It was a fun experience!” - Mama Juist

2023 - Day 8: Widow’s Ministry, Souvenir Shopping, and our Last (?) Team Meal

Today was our last day (or is it?!?). We started the day by heading to the Widow’s Ministry, the Bethesda House, in Los Guido. While we’ve been surrounded by poverty all week, this neighborhood is an even lower economic status and has lots of issues with drugs, alcohol, and prostitution. The Bethesda House exists to be an oasis for women who have been abandoned or mistreated and offers them assistance with food, prayer, and Bible study. They believe that when you restore a women you also restore the whole family. If she is changed, her kids and her husband (or boyfriend) will be changed too. We started off this trip to the widow’s ministry by going to the grocery store to purchase a month’s worth of groceries for 16 families. We give the kids a budget (12,400 colones) which is about $20 per family. It is kind of sad to think that we spent more on snacks the day before and that same amount will feed a family for a month. 2023 - Final Trip Thoughts and Reflections

  Abigail High – My main high was getting to spend time with people and get to know them. I absolutely love people and so I loved feeling like their sister. I also loved communicating with and pouring into people and kids who didn’t even speak the same language. It seemed like a glimpse of heaven, especially with the Costa Rican worship. Growth – One thing I struggle with a lot of the time is just being myself. God placed people on this trip who helped me feel comfortable and to be able to be myself. God grew me in being able to get to know people and talk to random people which I don’t usually do, even though I want to. Takeaway – I realized I don’t treat my actual brothers and sisters as well as I do my brothers and sisters in Christ. I also saw how much joy everyone has and how hard everyone works for every little thing. It has inspired me to not take things for granted and to not be lazy. 2023 - Day 4, Part 2: Team Reflections

 Here are our team reflections from yesterday: Jacob - the coconut guy was really generous. We found a bad coconut and he went in his house and picked out 6 fresh coconuts to open for us. He didn't have much, so him sharing this felt like a big deal! Jake - It's just a good reminder of how big the world is. While I'm at school every day all of this is going on - it's just weird to think about.  Emily - She was just impressed by the girls and Scottie working hard at painting. They just put on worship music on and sat in it for a couple hours while working. Jose - He just thought it was interesting how the kids would just swarm around these little tiny toys - it meant a lot to them. Isaac - Thought it was so cool/interesting that we ran into Ignacio three times - once when we were painting, once at the school, and once when he was walking back from school Talon - the kids know all the celebrations of all the soccer players.
