2023 - Day 3, Part 2: Lunch, Painting, and Dancing

After church we went to McDonald's for lunch - a very exciting thing for the students because they had seen an ad for the Kit Kat McFlurry earlier in the week and wanted to try it. The most interesting thing about our McDonald's experience was that 1. They serve fried chicken and 2. A lady came out excited to help us all order on the digital boards and she was excited to practice her English. At home do we treat people who speak another language like that? Excited to get to practice communicating with them?

We then drove down the street to the church we were going to paint, Iglesia de Dios I.D.A.I. This is a church plant from Senora's sister Irma, who has planted many churches in Limon. We arrived and quickly got to work, painting the fence from its green color to a fresh silver, and painting the building to the requested bright Papaya color.

We painted for a couple hours and had fun while doing. It, but realized pretty quickly that the papaya paint, since it was oil based, could only be painted on in one coat. If we tried to paint over it, the paint behind it would peel up - not going to lie, when we left the church yesterday it was looking a little rough! We had to leave because the church service was starting at 4:30 PM, so we cleaned up as best we could and got back in the van, planning to come back tomorrow. Some highlights from painting were Luke working really hard the whole time, Jacob, Isaac, and Grant being on the tape team prepping everything, and Ronny & Jose using the monkey approach to climb up the bars and paint the tall places without a ladder. Some low points were spilling a lot of paint on their tile and in the street, but we will fix it tomorrow!

We came back to the hotel for a 30 minute refresher / most of the boys hopped in the ocean and the girls hopped in the showers. We then headed back out to Limon to go to dinner at Senora's Sister Irma's church. We always love this night because we get to have family dinner with Senora's family, learn more about the area we're in, try some Caribbean style Costa Rican food, and DANCE! Our students were pretty into it this year and it lasted a long time until we were all just too sweaty from the dancing & the humidity to continue.

Team reflections from today:

Clausen - I always love dancing at the church with Senora's family because it is such a fun form of worship. Every song is a worship song, but we're line dancing and laughing, and banging on the tambourines...it's a blast!
Alena - I think it was really cool to go back to the church and get to see such a pure form of worship. I really loved how much music their was, and I had so much fun going up with a couple people to the front and dancing with all the people from the church!

Jose - The church was such an amazing  experience  a way different experience than the churches in the US.
