2023 - Day 5: Rafting the Pacuare

Today we checked out of our hotel in Limon and headed out to Turrialba to start our rafting adventure down the Pacuare River! The Pacuare is considered one of the top 5 rivers in the world to raft! It is so beautiful because you are fully surrounded by Primary rainforest, meaning it has never been touched, it’s exactly how God created it to be. It’s so incredible to see the HUGE trees and leaves, vines, volcanic rock, birds, and butterflies along the way.

Everyone was in a different boat, so they all had slightly different experiences:

Boat 1 - Isaac, Colby, Scottie, Abbi - The guide let us stand up a lot in the boat when going over rapids, which was fun, however he also called us the worst boat and told Colby to stop screaming when we went over rapids because she would scare the animals. Overall we were successful, No one fell off the boat!

Boat 2 - Jacob, Talon, Allie, Sophia - The guide was very nice and was very fun to be around. He fell in for the first time ever and he told us that we were the most memorable group he has ever had.  We all cared for each other and it was so fun to be together with someone who made it enjoyable :) #GlamourGirls #PuraVida #Suuiiiiii

Boat 3 - Kate, Korah, Jose, Grant - The champion’s boat. We led the pack with confidence and glory as we trudged along the mighty rapids. Eduardo led us to victory amongst the rest of the pack. We worked in unison as we paved the way to greatness. The majestic beauty of the jungle and the adrenaline of almost dying made for a great combo. We finished off in a little history lesson from our fearless leader learning about the history of the train tracks and earthquake of ‘91. P.S we love you Eduardo.

Boat 4 - Jake, Luke, ET, & BT - “I feel I contributed greatly to my group and was paddling my very best but my group thought differently. I put in all my heart and effort and I was getting torn down by the passenger behind me. Through these struggles I overcame the adversity and had an absolute blast exploring the jungle and God’s creation and would most definitely do it again.” -Jake Harrison

Boat 5 - Alena, Ronny, Clausen, Kalei, and Gabe - “I had a lot of fun going with the group I got placed with, even though Kalei and I were a little nervous about going rafting. Ronny was really helpful and kept making all of us laugh, even though our instructor kept yelling at us and getting mad. Clausen and I both fell out, which was really funny, and Ronny and Gabe helped get us back in the boat. It was also super funny when a fish jumped into our boat and Ronny grabbed it and we got to take pictures. It was an insanely cool experience and I’m really glad that everyone had a really good attitude and encouraged each other to finish the rafting strong.” - Alena

After rafting we came home through a CRAZY rainstorm (they don’t call it the rainforest for nothing), but it was just another opportunity to witness God’s majesty in action. Apparently while we were in Limon it has been raining in San Jose the whole time and the pacific coast is actually flooding, which never happens. When big storms like this happen we tend to have power outages on the farm, which did happen today, and it meant that our water was out for a short time. But luckily the power company came out and fixed it pretty quickly.

We ended the day at Kaffa, the local cafe, where the Rodriguez family always takes us to enjoy coffee and treats. It was a good night of connecting and catching up with the Rodriguez family for the chaperones, while the kids downed A LOT of sugar.

We are all ready to get back to serving tomorrow, starting with a soccer clinic in the morning then basketball and volleyball games in the evening. Tonight at Devos we reminded our students about the ENGAGE social media policy, they were on their phones a lot today...we understand it is exciting to post and update people on our trip, but we want to make sure our students are engaged and involved and pouring into each other and the trip more than their phones. We challenged them to take advantage of these last few days and really pour into relationships with one another, and into their relationship with God. The trip and their experience is going to be what they make it! Let's be intentional the next few days and have no regrets when we leave. Please be praying for our kids in these last few days of ministry.
